LDS/MormonTemples of the world map

This was an interesting project on a couple different levels. All Latter-Day saints at some point hear the phrase "Temples dotting the world." Or some variation of this that conjures up images of temples in every country of the world. In my mind this also meant that they were evenly dispersed across the globe. As I put this graphic together, any notions of even-dispersal of temples, was shattered. Don't get me wrong, the shear number of temples in the world is amazing. Early Saint, not to mention ancient prophets would stand amazed at what Latter-Day Saints have accomplished. At the same time its easy to see how much more work needs to be done to spread the incredible Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Process

The majority of source material for the map came from the Official church temple site at LDS.org. From this online map application I went through each continent and state to find and label the map I created. All work was done in Illustrator over a period of several hours, spread out over a couple days. Needless to say, North America presented the greatest challenge in fitting every dot and label.
After submitting an initial proof, the map went through several revisions before being printed.

File handling and missing imagery

The map itself was a single file. I brought this into InDesign, then the other graphics as separate files. Our system at work requires that graphics be smaller than 30mb. The Cut out of the temples are not actually in the final print. For reasons unknown to me it was removed from the layout, leaving gaping white space at the bottom of the page. So as a treat to my readers you get to see the layout as it was meant to appear in the paper.
